Reassessing the good

THE problem about being groomed to be the “good guy” is that there’s this engrained belief in the best in people. There’s an inclination to believe in the theory that goodness is innate and that evil is either a result of being overwhelmed by some persistent external stimulus or a reaction to a perceived evil. That said, I’ve come to realize that society and today’s reality makes it extremely hard to maintain sincere kindness. The “dog-eat-dog” cliche’s application has clearly manifested itself universally — seen in the relationships between states, between companies, or in relationships more intimate, like father-son, student-teacher.
